Who are Avocet Academy Trust?

Avocet Academy Trust was formed in November 2014 and currently comprises three school in Suffolk. Leiston Primary School, Easton Primary, Wickham Market Primary School and Aldeburgh Primary School. Both Leiston and Wickham Market also have on site nurseries whilst Easton has a pre-school in the village.

Avocet Academy’s statement of values is as follows:

As an Academy, all schools are inclusive and accepting of difference where values of democracy are intrinsic to our school structures and ethos. The Behaviour Policies in all schools outline a clear and consistent code of conduct; children are encouraged to make positive behaviour choices within a safe learning environment and to engage others with respect, compassion, honesty and integrity. Mutual respect and tolerance of other’s beliefs and religions are proactively encouraged through each school’s curriculum.

Position and Responsibilities: Chair of Trustees and Chair of Governor at Wickham, responsible for Data Analysis

Brief Biography: Roger was professionally involved in education over his working life, including time as a headteacher of two Primary schools and as a Senior Adviser, time which included advising headteachers and staff in schools and managing initiatives in several key areas of school improvement.

Since moving to Wickham Market in 2012, he has been involved in the governing body of Wickham Market Primary School, as well as the setting up of the Academy trust, and as a volunteer helper at the school. He is pleased to be able to offer both his professional experiences and his commitment to being involved in the community of Wickham Market to both the school and the academy trust.

Position and Responsibilities: Vice Chair of Trustees and Chair of Finance and Audit Committees

Brief Biography: Will is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants having qualified in 2008. As an Accountant for Hutchison Ports UK Will ensures the completion of the management accounts for the Port of Felixstowe Group Companies.

Will has vast experience in budgeting, implementing cost efficiencies, revenue initiatives and scenario modelling to assess multi million pound contracts. Will also has experience of leading many changes in systems and internal processes.

Will has 2 children, both of whom attend Leiston Primary School.

Brief Biography: Cheryl is employed by the Trust and is the CEO and Accounting officer. She has been working for the Trust since it started in 2014 and was employed in one of the schools in the Trust prior to this. She has ten years headship experience in a primary setting

Brief Biography: Joanne is employed by the Trust as executive Headteacher and has worked as a Headteacher in a primary school setting for more than ten years.

Position and Responsibilities: Member, Trustee, Member of Finance and Audit Committee, responsible for Premises

Brief Biography: Tony is a Town and District councillor and passionate about the community that he serves.

He is a retired engineer and this allows him the time to give to Avocet Academy Trust in working with the pupils, Staff and their welfare and safety throughout the Academy.

Position and Responsibilities: Member, Trustee

Brief Biography: Jeremy is an accomplished senior manager, having developed strategy for Unilever and as part of the team which established a highly dynamic ice cream business operating in over 100 countries.

His last role in Unilever was as Vice President for Leadership Development and has a passion for the development of Resilient Leadership in organisations.

He is a professional coach, with clients across the globe operating in public, private and third sectors. Jeremy has been involved in the governance of schools since 2009 and was part of the driving force which led to the establishment of Avocet Academy in 2014.

Position and Responsibilities: Member, Interim Chair of Leiston Governors

Brief Biography: Peter is a retired GP, with experience of teaching young doctors. Awarded the MBE for services to the community and medicine.

A governor of Wickham Market school for 9 years until recently. Still involved with the school through Forest School, links with All Saints Church and Red Triangle Bowls club.

A founder "Member" of Avocet Academy, and delighted to continue to serve in this capacity.

Position and Responsibilities: Trustee, responsible for Infrastructure.

Brief Biography: Silas Norman is a project manager for an engineering and construction company.

Brief Biography: Jill Hardy is employed by the Trust as the Business leader. She has a wealth of experience in business and school management and finance and leads an administration and finance team across the Trust.

Brief Biography:  Jeremy is an accountant with many years experience in practice and commerce.

Jeremy is currently Managing Director of a local charity focusing on improving outcomes for young people who struggle to fit into mainstream education.

Rosemary Carter

Position and Responsiblities:  Trustee and Member of the Audit and Risk Committee, Chair of Governors of Aldeburgh Primary School.

Brief biography:  Rosemary is a solicitor and mediator in practice in London and East Anglia. She has extensive Non-Executive Director experience on national boards in the public and charitable sectors.

Rosemary has a wide range of skills and experience in areas such as strategic development, consumer interests, complex problem solving, risk analysis and management, performance and financial management, negotiation and stakeholder management.

She has chaired governance reviews for three national organisations.

Position and Responsiblities: Trustee

Brief biography:  Tom is a senior manager/director with 25 years experience across a range of industries. Having spent many years in management roles across a number of businesses in East Anglia, Tom moved into international roles culminating in 7 years in the oil and gas industry in Australia and Asia Pacific.

With a strong background in positioning and developing business for sustainable growth, Tom has returned home to Suffolk with a desire to assist regional businesses and organisations with their development. Tom and his wife have a long personal and professional connection with mid-Suffolk.

Position and Responsiblities: Trustee, Chair of Governors of Easton Primary School.

Brief biography: Jonathan lives in the village of Easton on his farm with his wife Mary. He is CEO of a Commodity Trading & Brokerage company which trades worldwide, and a director of a Property Management company. His main hobby is collecting, restoring and racing classic sports cars.

Position and Responsiblities: Trustee

Brief biography: HR Professional with over 10 years HR experience within public and private sectors, including Education. Active member of the PTA at my children's schools with a passion for ensuring great education for all children. I have a busy working life and fun family life, I'm looking forward to driving the development of Avocet for all the member schools.
